Pages of Experience

(1987)

In 1987, Joseph McKenzie returned to public exhibition with Pages of Experience, a major retrospective spanning some forty years of his photography.

The exhibition was conceived, arranged and launched by his son, Frank McKenzie, and marked McKenzie’s first public exhibition following his withdrawal from showing his work publicly in 1973.

Opening at the Third Eye Centre in Glasgow, Pages of Experience subsequently travelled to Paris and other venues, bringing together photographs from across McKenzie’s long and remarkably varied career.

The exhibition was accompanied by Pages of Experience, McKenzie’s first publication. Together, the exhibition and book provided an opportunity to reconsider four decades of work and marked an important re-emergence of his photography before a public audience. The exhibition was extremely well received by the public, while sales of the accompanying were exceptionally strong, considerably exceeding those normally achieved by comparable photographic publications at the time.
